Down Syndrome Facies (a)

Note what signs you see.
I see (W. Wertelecki, M.D.) epicanthic folds, a low nasal bridge, and a small nasal tip. I also see a facies (a face that talks to me – is trying to tell me that it is a signal of ?). I think that it is suggestive of Down syndrome (DS). Is this a fact? – NO – it is a point of view. See CLINICAL PEARLS about why the notion “facies” is so difficult to grasp. In any case, if this child has DS, it should be hypotonic – if not, I would withdraw my impression. Why? – see the tutorial on hypotonia.
