I (W. Wertelecki, M.D.) see a clear example that outstanding artists have outstanding “open eyes”. At the time nobody knew the nature of the facial tumors illustrated here. In the context of multiple “fleshy” facial tumors, the bag-like (saccular) tumors attached to the maxillary area strongly suggest the diagnosis.
Before we move on toward interpretations of cause, etc., I suggest you see first at least one related image.
