I (W. Wertelecki, M.D.) see that the axis of the great toe (hallux) is deviated away from the midline of the body (valgus).
Hallux valgus is an acquired deformity relatively more common in women. In vernacular parlance it is called bunion.
PERSPECTIVE: There is a wide-held belief that one of the causes of hallux valgus is the wearing of narrow-pointed shoes. Regarding valgus, cubitus valgus (forearm) and genu valgus (knee) are important signs that can be signals of important syndromes (see).
