PERSPECTIVE: These sisters plus another sister and one of their sons illustrate how a diagnosis may depend on signs and signals distributed among family members. Furthermore, this example also illustrates that familial is not a synonym of “genetic”. As shown in the gallery of members of this family, the disorder impacts inhabitants of a particular village in a mountainous region deficient in iodine.
