Facies, Nature of

Facies in general denotes a typical face and in Medicine it conveys notions of pathogenesis (as in febrile facies), etiology or diagnosis (as in Down syndrome). A facies is more than the sum of parts. Try as we may, word descriptions or illustrations of ears, nose, lips, etc. alone are insufficient to convey the notion of facies.
