Rhinitis Cheilitis

Note what signs you see.
I (W. Wertelecki, M.D.) see an infant with inflammatory changes inclusive of the nose (rhinitis) and lips (cheilitis). It is provocative in this instance, the nasal discharge (rhinorrhea) and the angular cheilitis.
The combination of rhinitis-cheilitis is characteristic of congenital syphilis (please see related gallery).
PERSPECTIVE: Remember that syphilis is with us and that it can be a congenital infection. In essence, syphilis is associated with different constellation of signs during its different stages (congenital, primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary). There also is a characteristic of neuro-syphilis syndrome.
