Arthrogryposis Multiplex

I (W. Wertelecki, M.D.) see a historic image (1841) that serves to illustrate several points beyond the “label” AMC or arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. AMC is defined as several contractures and stiffness of several articulations (in vulgar English – “joints”).

PERSPECTIVES: Concerning AMC, please see subsequent postings. Concerning this particular illustration, please note that at the time many syndromes known today were unknown. In addition to “joints” contractures, please note: receding scalp hair, small nose, micrognathia, low set malrotated ear with minimally folded helix and gibbus. These signs are strongly suggestive of Edwards syndrome later found to be associated with trisomy 18 (18+).
