Gastroschisis (not to confuse with Omphalocele)

Note what signs you see.
I (W. Wertelecki, M.D.) see a gap on the anterior abdominal wall with protrusion of intestine. Please note the lack of a sack or membrane containing the intestines and that the defect is paraumbilical with no impact on the umbilical cord. Omphaloceles usually are within a sack and are associated with umbilical cord defects. Gastroschisis is really associated with other malformations in contrast to omphaloceles which often are component of the variety of syndromes.
