Gauguin – Sexism – Down Syndrome
Gauguin, accused by many of having abused young women, depicted signs of Down syndrome with no awareness of Dr. Down or the syndrome. He did know about “misery”. This story reminded us that the credit claimed and given to Dr. J. Lejeune for the discovery of trisomy 21 association with Down syndrome is challenged by serious objections; apparently the credit belongs to his female co-worker. In this perspective both Gauguin and Lejeune illustrate the prevalence and persistence of sexism.
