Ear Tag Preauricular

I (W. Wertelecki, M.D.) see a preauricular appendage usually called “ear tag”. In fact, such anomalies may represent partial duplications of the tragus. At times they may be located on the cheek, may contain fat or cartilage. In most instances effected children are normal but it is prudent for clinicians to insure defects of hearing on the side of the anomaly.
PERSPECTIVE: The anomaly represents an alteration of development of the first and second brachial arch. Syndromes that impact these arches or pharyngeal pouches, such as Goldenhar or hemifacial microsomia syndromes, usually have abnormalities of the auricle, in particular ear tags.
